Kinmen Bridge Designed by CECI Wins 2024 IRF Global Road Achievement Award

Date: 2024/12/13

In a display of global acclaim, the Kinmen Bridge—Taiwan’s landmark project designed and supervised by CECI Engineering Consultants, Inc., Taiwan—has been honored with the prestigious 2024 International Road Federation (IRF) Global Road Achievement Award (GRAA) in the Design Category. This accolade celebrates the Kinmen Bridge as a shining example of excellence and innovation in the global road and transportation industry. The GRAA is one of the most significant awards in the global road and transportation sector, with a highly rigorous selection process. A jury of elite experts from around the world evaluates outstanding projects submitted by various countries and selects the most exceptional ones in each category. The Kinmen Bridge distinguished itself among numerous competitors to claim the Design award, a testament to the project's outstanding design and innovative spirit. The award ceremony took place on December 12, 2024, during the IRF Global R2T Conference & Exhibition in Orlando, USA.

CECI Chairman Dr. Shih Yi-Fang proudly accepted the award as head of the company’s delegation, which also included Vice President Huang Ping-Hsun, Associate Vice President Chiang Chi-Heng, and Technical Managers Chen Ming-Ku and Ko Ming-Chia. Joining them to witness this momentous occasion were representatives of the Freeway Bureau, Ministry of Transportation and Communications: Chief Engineer Kuo Cheng-Chang, 5th Branch Director Chang Chen-Yu, and Section Chief Fong Yen-Ming, as well as Professor Su Yu-Min from National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology, who made significant contributions to the award application process.

In addition to attending the award ceremony, the delegation visited the University of Miami, the University of Florida, and the Florida Department of Transportation’s Materials Research Lab. They engaged in discussions on the latest developments in new materials research, shared practical insights between Taiwan and the United States, and toured the lab facilities, gaining valuable knowledge. Both sides agreed that, given the similar environmental conditions between Taiwan and Florida, there is great potential for future collaboration and exchanges.

With a total length of 5.4 kilometers and a main span of 200 meters supported by five towers reaching 78 meters above ocean waters, the Kinmen Bridge stretches over the 23-meter-deep Kinmen-Lieyu Waterway and is Taiwan’s first cross-sea extradosed bridge. The Kinmen Bridge project is known internationally for its complexity and challenging conditions: the project team had to address a rough ocean environment, varying and non-uniform granite bedrock geology, and numerous challenges related to navigating channels, landscaping, constructability, and stringent schedule and cost requirements.

The recognition of the Kinmen Bridge not only highlights Taiwan’s achievements in road and transportation design but also brings global attention to CECI Engineering Consultants, Inc., Taiwan. Chairman Shih Yi-Fang expressed his gratitude, stating: “We are deeply honored to receive the IRF Global Road Achievement Award. This recognition is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the Kinmen Bridge project team and strengthens our resolve to continue driving innovation in design and technological applications. Our goal is to bring more of Taiwan’s outstanding designs to the global stage and collaborate with industries worldwide to explore a future of safer, greener, and more resilient road infrastructure.”
